Programming the DBS System

A specialist programs your implanted DBS system to optimize your therapy.

Programming Sessions

After you have healed from the implant procedure, your doctor will use a wireless device to turn on the neurostimulator and program the settings to best control your symptoms while minimizing side effects. You will return for follow-up sessions to further adjust the settings. Periodic adjustments are a routine part of DBS Therapy.

What to Expect

After the initial programming, people with tremor may feel a brief tingling sensation, and usually experience relief from symptoms almost immediately. However, results vary. People with other symptoms of Parkinson's disease often do not feel any sensation, and the full effect of the therapy may not be immediate.

You will see the best results after the system has been fine-tuned for your specific symptom control needs. It may take several months to reach maximum effect.

Can I Control the Settings?

Depends on what system you receive and your therapy needs. You may be able to control certain functions of the DBS Therapy system with a hand-held controller. This may include:

  • Turning the neurostimulator on and off.
  • Controlling the intensity of stimulation
  • Checking the battery status
