When to Consider Medtronic Deep Brain Stimulation

If essential tremor symptoms are affecting your quality of life, don't wait to talk to your doctor about Medtronic DBS Therapy.

Medtronic DBS Therapy reduces tremors associated with ET. Deep brain stimulation may be a treatment option if any of the following affect your life:

  • Tremors interfere with activities of daily living (e.g. eating, dressing or writing)
  • You are unable to work due to tremors
  • Medications are ineffective or cause troubling side effects (e.g. sleepiness, dizziness, or thinking problems)

Deep brain stimulation is indicated for people diagnosed with ET who:

  • Have a severe tremor that significantly affects their ability to perform everyday tasks

AND

  • Find that medications are not effective and/or cause intolerable side effects

Will My Doctor Be Familiar With Medtronic DBS Therapy?

Your primary care doctor may or may not be familiar with Medtronic DBS Therapy as a treatment option. DBS Therapy is more commonly known among neurologists and movement disorder specialists. If you would like to speak with someone who is more knowledgeable about DBS, ask your doctor to refer you to a specialist, or find a specialist now.

When Should I Discuss DBS Therapy With My Doctor?

If medications aren't improving your tremor, or you find the side effects intolerable, talk to your doctor or find a specialist who can determine whether Medtronic DBS Therapy is right for you.

The goal in treatment of essential tremor is to reduce your tremor so it doesn't interfere with your ability to perform daily tasks.

Medications generally lessen the severity of ET, but effectiveness can vary greatly from person to person. Increased medication for better tremor control can sometimes result in troubling side effects (sleepiness, dizziness, or thinking problems).
